We grew up watching mama mbogas and mama kibandas hustle from dawn to dusk. We saw their struggle. We built a revolution.
Growing up in Serem, Vihiga County, we watched the women and men who fed our families struggle every single day. Mama mboga carrying heavy loads to market. Mama kibanda rising before the sun to prepare food. Farmers trekking kilometres to sell their harvest.
They worked harder than anyone. Yet they earned less, reached fewer customers, and remained invisible to the digital economy that was transforming Kenya around them.
We were young. We were students, graduates, hustlers ourselves. But we had one thing our community's traders didn't: we understood technology. And we had a question burning inside us — what if we used it for them?
Serem Market had always been the heartbeat of our community — vibrant on Wednesdays and Saturdays, buzzing with life, color, and commerce. But trade was limited by who could physically show up, how far word could travel, and who had transport that day.
The products were excellent. The vendors were talented, knowledgeable, hardworking. The only thing missing was reach — a bridge between Serem's traders and the customers who needed them.
We realised: the market was not broken. It just wasn't free yet. Soko Huru — Free Market — was about to change that.
This is not just a marketplace. This is a movement — a declaration that Serem's traders deserve the same digital tools as anyone in Nairobi. That Vihiga's economy deserves to be free.
We are a generation that refused to accept that digital opportunity was only for big cities. We brought it home — to Serem, to Vihiga, to every mama mboga who deserves to be found.

SOKO HURU means "Free Market" in Swahili. Born in Serem, Vihiga County, our story began with a bold vision — inspired by the rise of Boma Yangu, the government's landmark affordable housing programme transforming how Kenyans live, own, and thrive.
We saw that a new generation of homeowners and communities needed more than shelter — they needed a marketplace that could grow with them. SOKO HURU is powering the Boma Yangu ecosystem, bringing fresh produce, household essentials, Mtumba fashion and everyday goods directly to doorsteps across Vihiga County.
We connect local farmers, producers and traders directly with households — cutting out unnecessary middlemen and ensuring the freshest products at the fairest prices, every day.
